The Epson EX3280 3LCD XGA projector is portable, affordable and light enough to produce an image suitable for a medium-sized room with ambient light. The projector’s XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) is low by today’s standards, but good enough to make text readable on most documents and more than adequate for casual presentations. Epson can also display images from two sources simultaneously using split screen and even handles photorealistic images well for a business projector. At $499.99, it’s a great value and our new Editors’ Choice among portable business and education projectors for medium-sized rooms.

Like any projector that uses three display chips, including the Epson Pro EX9240 and Epson Pro EX10000, the EX3280 has a 3LCD design for consistent color and white brightness (3,600 lumens each) and a guaranteed image without iridescent artifacts. ), which means color images will be as bright as you’d expect from a white brightness rating.

All three of these Epson projectors are part of the company’s portable lineup, but the EX3280’s lower resolution compared to the other two is a key differentiator. Native XGA display chips limit the amount of fine detail the projector can display, making it a poor choice for highly detailed line graphics or documents with unusually small font. However, the resolution is fine for text in most documents, let alone the large font of most slideshows.

The XGA resolution gives the EX3280 a 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning that a 16:9 image will either be distorted (if you set it to fill the entire screen) or letterboxed (black bands above and below the image). Consolidating a 16:9 image into a 4:3 display reduces image height and legibility. This reduces the effective brightness by blocking the light that would otherwise fall on these areas. On the other hand, the XGA resolution of the projector can partly be responsible for the low price.

A clear plus over the EX3280 and the two Epson Pros, the EX3280 is the most portable of the three, although Epson calls the three portable and includes a soft carrying case with each. It weighs only 5.2 pounds and measures 11.9 x 9.3 x 3.2 inches. You can find smaller and lighter projectors like the AAXA P6X Pico projector, but the EX3280 is one of the most compact that can deliver a large enough image for a medium-sized room with ambient light.

Setting up the Epson EX3280 requires more than finding a spot for it, pointing it at the screen, connecting the video cable and power cord, turning it on, and manually focusing. This simplicity and cost savings comes from cutting corners; Optical zoom is mainly missing here. The projector offers digital zoom, but it’s better to avoid it because it introduces scaling artifacts and reduces brightness. (Any digital zoom setting that produces an image smaller than full size uses only a portion of the imaging chips, which block less light.)

Connectivity options are minimal, limited to a VGA port, an HDMI port, and a USB Type-B port with plug-and-play compatibility for PC and Mac. You can easily define a two-way distribution function for any pair of three inputs.

The built-in 2-watt mono speaker offers reasonable sound quality at volumes high enough for a medium-sized room, although it is tinny at higher volumes. Unfortunately, there is no audio output, so if you need higher volume or better sound quality, you should connect an external sound system to your audio source, not through the projector.

The EX3280’s five color modes deliver a brilliant image for highly legible text and vivid colors for graphics. For presentations that contain photorealistic images or video clips, or when watching a longer video or movie, the differences between the modes are more pronounced.

Dynamic mode has a slight yellow-green distortion. The good news is that there’s much less green distortion than most projectors’ brightest modes, and it’s easy to see only in the brightest shades of grayscale images. In a dark room, the mode looks darker gray than black on a black background. But in moderate ambient light, dark black tends to wash out with any projector and look decently black, so it’s not really a problem for a projector designed to be used with the lights on.

Photorealistic images in dynamic mode offer accurate color matching for most skin tones. However, the brightness level is too high to ensure good contrast. The overall brightness of the image will bring out the details of the shadows, but the bright areas will look exaggerated.

Epson’s Presentation mode is more like Dynamic for graphics and photorealistic images, with some colors being a bit richer and a bit more accurate. It also shows an increased tendency for photorealistic images to appear exaggerated.

Cinema mode offers a step up from Presentation in terms of color saturation and accuracy. For photorealistic images, it provides excellent contrast and almost no sense of overexposure, making it an obvious choice for presentations with lots of photos or video clips, provided it is bright enough for the image size and ambient light level. Bright video and movie scenes were very watchable, although dark scenes looked too dark and shadow detail was lost.

Epson Powerlite Pilot (elpcb01) V12h443020 B&h Photo Video

SRGB mode offers another small step in color accuracy, but less contrast than cinema. Finally, Blackboard adds just enough red to stand out in some of the photos in our test suite.

As a point of reference, a 260-inch screen with a 1.0 gain and 4:3 aspect ratio can produce 3,600 lumens in a dark room (according to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers). In moderate ambient light, this is enough for a screen with a diagonal of 155 inches. With my 90-inch screen at 1.0 gain, the image was bright enough to use in moderate ambient light, even in low-brightness Cinema mode.

Although the Epson EX3280 has high ratings all around, it won’t appeal to everyone. If you think 1080p is outdated or you need a higher resolution to display small fonts or detailed line art, you should look at native 1080p projectors like the DLP-based Epson Pro EX9240 and InFocus Genesis. Consider the IN118BB or the Epson Pro EX10000, which claims 1080p, although its actual resolution is slightly different. Alternatively, if you want a more portable projector and don’t mind the loss of brightness, you can opt for the AAXA P6X.

The EX3280 does an excellent job for an XGA projector. It provides sharp text and other details suitable for its resolution; Clear image with attractive colors for graphics; And a very watchable video with all the essential features for a business and educational projector. It is cheap and easy to carry, whether from room to room or on a business trip. This combination is good enough to win an Editors’ Choice award.
