The Epson Expression Premium XP-640 Small-In-One looks like a color inkjet printer that can handle any print job you throw at it. As the name suggests, it does little and everything. From standard printing on plain paper, printing on envelopes, copying and scanning documents to printing to DVD, the Epson XP-640 still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

The Epson XP-640 is a wireless printer that can do the job of any large printer despite its small size thanks to the advanced features of the XP-640. The XP-640 measures 15.4 x 19.8 x 5.6 inches and weighs 21.5 pounds. This printer is equipped with a 2.7-inch flip-out LCD screen that allows you to view the printer’s functions and settings on the menu screen using the touch navigation panel. I find this LCD panel useful as it can be positioned at any angle that best suits the user.

There is a flip cover above the flatbed scanner section of the printer. This is where you place your photo or document to be scanned or copied. The XP-640 comes with an inkjet CD/DVD adapter. This feature is perfect for the home or small business that needs to provide customers with a more professional and creative disc than handwritten with a marker, or you can use it to mark your DVD home movies.
On the front of the printer, there is an SD card slot on the left, and a USB storage port on the bottom left. Since this printer does not require a computer, you can use an SD card or USB flash drive to print images. It’s a Wi-Fi wireless printer, so you’re not limited to a computer, SD card, or USB drive. You have the ability to print directly from your phone, iPad or tablet without the need for a wireless router or access point thanks to Epson WiFi Direct technology. The XP-640 WLAN uses the 802.11 b/g/n WI-Fi standard, so you shouldn’t have any trouble connecting at home or in the office.
Speaking of printing from your phone, there’s an app for your phone or tablet called Epson Creative Print that lets you print collages, coloring books, greeting cards, and personalized stationery. In addition, the Creative Print app makes it easy to print photos from your Facebook and Instagram accounts. Since I have a lot of photos on my Facebook and Instagram accounts, this has become one of my personal favorites for the XP-640. It’s very easy for me to choose an image I like and print it on one of my favorite Epson photo papers.

Paper choices range from plain paper to ultra-premium photo paper, matte paper and transfers. With the XP-640 you can choose from a wide range of papers. There are two separate paper trays that contain special print paper for specific jobs. The manual goes into detail about this, but basically paper trays hold different sizes and paper for specific print jobs. The main paper tray holds 100 sheets of plain paper and the optional photo paper tray holds 20 premium photo paper. The output tray holds up to 30 plain sheets. One nice feature I like about the XP-640 is the duplex printing capability. It’s also a great time saver.
I have an Epson Stylus CX4800 printer and one of my favorite features is that it uses DURABrite ink. The ink is mostly smudge, fade and water resistant which is very important as I need to print photos as well as print labels on the CDs and DVDs I give to clients. I print my own business cards, so the ink I need to use lasts a long time. I had to make sure that text and graphics didn’t smudge after someone worked on them for a while, and thanks to DURABite ink, that never happened. I even splashed a few drops of water on my business card as a test and it didn’t damage or leave water stains.
The Epson XP-640 uses the new brand Claria ink. Claria ink is smudge-resistant, water-resistant and scratch-resistant. Claria ink has excellent resistance to light, heat and moisture, which can fade images over time. Claria inks provide bright, rich colors and a wide color gamut that will appeal to many users who prefer professional and amateur photographers who want lab-quality prints. Epson claims that ink color lasts 200 years in the photo album and 98 years out of the album. I feel so good. I know that I have personal photos that I want to keep as long as possible.
The XP-640 uses a 5-color palette of dye-based cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, yellow and photo black. It is recommended to have separate cartridges because you only need to replace the ink that has run out. The ink comes in both standard and high-yield sizes, which is great for high-volume printing as it effectively doubles the output.

While print speed doesn’t matter much to me, usually when I need to print something like an image or a label on a DVD, I let the printer do its job while I do something else. By the time I’m done, the printer will be ready. However, when print speed is a factor, in office environments the Epson XP-640’s print speed is 10ppm with color ink and 13ppm with black ink. This is 5 pages per minute for double-sided color pages and 4.5 pages per minute for black ink double-sided pages.
The print speed is 20 seconds for a 4″ x 6″ photo in draft mode. I printed some 8″ x 10″ photos on Epson Premium Photo Paper and can say I was amazed at how quickly and with good print quality the photos were taken. The standout feature of the XP-640 is its duplex printing capability, which saves you time because you don’t have to turn the paper over directly to print on the back side of the paper.
Other Epson printers I’ve used to print photos, while having good print quality, were slow compared to the XP-640’s print speed. It was similar to other Epson printers taking time to print good quality. But with the XP-640, the printer felt confident enough to take great photos without sacrificing print quality. The prints I received definitely looked like lab quality prints. The Epson XP-640 has a maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi (dots per inch).
Keep in mind that the photos I print are images I took and edited, so exposure, contrast, gamma, shadows, etc. all affect the quality of the print. I also chose the printer settings to achieve the desired quality. If the photo you’re trying to print isn’t bright, crisp, or sharp, you don’t need to print the perfect image. Make sure your image looks good for a lab-quality print.

Along with printing, the Epson XP-640 copies and scans documents and images through the flatbed on top of the printer. The image sensor is a CIS linear sensor with a hardware resolution of 2400 dpi and an interpolated resolution of 9600 x 9600. Unlike some printers that use a CCD (Charge Coupled Device, similar to the image sensor in a digital camera), the image sensor. , Epson XP-640 uses a CIS image sensor or a contact image sensor. CIS is more compact, has higher optical resolution, and has no optical distortion.
The Epson XP-640 has a maximum scan size of 8.5 x 11.7 inches (21.6 cm x 29.7 cm). It has 48 bit input, 24 bit input, 16 bit input and 8 bit output. The Epson XP-640 has a speed of 10 cpm for black and white and 7.2 cpm for color copies. It has standard copy modes such as color, black, photo, text, and image, and has copy sizes up to 8.5 x 14 inches.
The Epson XP-640 has a dedicated CD tray that allows you to print on printable CDs or DVDs. This feature eliminates the need
