If you’re thinking about moving to a 13-inch widescreen printer, the options have never been so good. With three printers available from Canon, and four models, including the Artisan 1430 reviewed here, from Epson, there are plenty of options to choose from both in terms of features and price.

There are two basic types of inkjet printers available – dye-based, and pigment-based. While pigments have historically had a reputation for longevity, dye inks have the advantage of producing vibrant colors. This distinction is not as clear-cut as it once was, as dyes are making major advances in longevity, and the types of media they can print on. In the case of the Artisan 1430, Epson claims 200 years of storage, and 98 years of display – a color-based system for durability.

The Artisan 1430 replaces the Stylus 1400. At first I was fooled by the new Artisan branding that Epson has put on this printer, thinking that it was only allocated to low-end consumer models and all-in-one devices. While the 1430 is the entry-level offering in the 13-inch market, it has the features needed to be a valuable addition to any digital photographer’s studio, especially for those who are not regular printers.

Epson packaged the Artisan 1430 with a full set of six ink tanks each – black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta (Figure 1). This ink is Epson’s Claria Hi-Definition ink with increased resistance to mud, scratches and water. This quick test for dirt and water resistance shows that the inks live up to their claims – even on glossy paper, water causes no problems, and it takes more pressure than usual to see dirt problems.

Included is an inkjet CD/DVD printing tray, and a suite of software including Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, Epson Print CD, and driver software. If you are connecting via USB, note that no USB cable is included with the printer.

Installing the Artisan 1430 involves routinely removing the seemingly endless strips of tape and installing the ink cartridges (Figure 5). Once this is done, turn on the printer and allow the ink nozzles to fill, the whole process takes about 15 minutes.

Continuous Ink System For Epson Artisan 1430

I set up Artisan 1430 on my network for about 10 minutes (Figures 3 – 5). The software installation guides you through the process, and there were no problems finding the printer and adding it to my network. WiFi supports 082.11b/g/n with n providing about 2.5 times the speed of the previous model which only supports up to g levels.

You’ll need to make sure you’re in the right mode for your setup – the Artisan 1430 doesn’t have an LCD screen like many newer printers, but there’s a set of buttons directly on the top panel that lets you see what the current status is. With WiFi, just press the appropriate button and tick the green light above the WiFi label (Figure 6). Other buttons allow you to print a network status page, cancel the current print job, and replace the ink cartridge. If You Buy Now, you will only buy this item. Epson Wf 7720 Tips And Tricks

The Epson Artisan 1430 is another blast from the past for a printer that may sound ancient, but was very modern for its day. In addition, it is a dedicated printer capable of producing stunning high-quality prints using a six-color ink system that will rival today’s printers.

The Epson Artisan 1430 Wide Format printer is marketed primarily as a photo printer and therefore output quality, not speed, will be the main deciding factor whether you get one or not. However, we know many of you are interested in print speed, so after some research we found that print speeds are around 3ppm for both color and monochrome pages. It’s very slow, but remember it’s all about print quality with this printer, which is why it’s considered the best card stock printer. However, check out the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 if you’re looking for something fast.

The Epson Artisan 1430 Inkjet Printer has an excellent ability to print photos and its image quality representation is one of the best, without any problems. Reproducing color photos on photo paper or matte presentation paper provides excellent results. On plain paper the colors are accurate, but slightly faded. But this also means that, if you need to print text documents, they will be slightly erased and so be aware of that. Check out the HP Designjet T120 if documents are what you need most from your printer.

The Epson Artisan 1430 Printer/Scanner comes with your most advanced six-color ink system: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Light Cyan and Light Magenta. Because of this, it is very difficult to estimate operating costs because we do not know when the two additional ink cartridges will produce more ink. However, since there’s no program you can get into with cheap ink, and considering the out-of-box costs of these programs, it’s safe to say that the costs can be high if you’re not mistaken. Check out the Brother Inkjet Printer MFC-J985DW if you want to save on operating costs.

The printer was first released in 2012, so it won’t work; does not have advanced features like most modern printers. It has a CD/DVD compatible tray for printing photos directly in that format. But it has wi fi and USB connectivity, and a PictBridge USB Port on the front. Mobile links include the EpsonConnect app. Overall, printer accessories still make for effective competition in the home printer market.

The paper feed on the Epson Artisan 1430 has a capacity of 100 sheets of plain paper and 30 sheets of special media or fine art paper. The product warranty is one year, which is always nice to have, but can be extended if you need it. And despite being a wide-format printer, it’s actually quite compact, measuring just 24.3 x 12.7 x 8.5. We know it sounds big, and it is, but for a wide-format printer, this is one of the smallest
