Minimize Chatbot Window Load New Chatbot Message While I’m trying to live a paperless life, it’s impossible to completely let go. For example, returning parcels means printing a label (although there are now some exceptions), and there are still some companies that insist on paper tickets.
But when you only print a few pages a month, there’s no point in having a big printer, or one that draws attention. So I was curious to try out the HP Tango X, a compact AirPrint-compatible printer that can be disguised as a book when not in use…
The printer is a white plastic rectangle with a dark gray base. At the top, there’s a relatively low-profile HP logo, and a light gray HP Tango X label in small print on the front.

The combination of a fairly minimalist look and compact size means the Tango X is already something that can be stored discreetly, but since the little white plastic cases aren’t very attractive either, the printer comes with a white linen cover. choosing gray or indigo, which is a deep blue color is quite nice. This almost looks like a dark gray.
The idea is that if, like me, you print occasionally, plugging the printer into power when you really need it, it can sit on a shelf the rest of the time and no one would know it happened. there
The bad news is that, at its longest dimension of 15 inches, it doesn’t sit upright on most shelves. But it sits comfortably horizontally on our shelves, and yes, you’d never guess what it is. I wouldn’t say it looks like a book, just a classic binder or something. But it definitely ticks the “discreetly hide your printer” box.
Setting up wireless devices can sometimes be very difficult and unreliable, and sometimes I have to resort to sacrificing a goat as an offering to the Wi-Fi gods. But getting Tango X up and running couldn’t be easier.
Hp Tango X With Cover Printer Review
You must install the HP Smart software on your iPhone to set up the printer. Upon opening the app, the printer was immediately detected and asked for my Wi-Fi details. I inserted these, then used animations to show how to install the supplied black and multi-color ink cartridges.
You’ll notice that in step 3 it asked me if I needed help. This is because I stopped at this stage, and he noticed a break in what he thought was great UI design and offered additional advice.
After setting it up on my iPhone, it showed up as an available printer on all networked devices – iOS and Mac – without any further steps.
As a printer designed for occasional use, you have to open the linen cover and then lift the cover to load the paper. There’s no paper tray, but the linen cover serves this function well if there’s enough room to lay flat in front of the printer. It’s definitely not on a regular shelf, but since I generally only print one page, I’m happy enough to grab it myself. If I were to make a series of prints, I would put them on a table.

The speed is enough to pick up some ink: about 10 seconds for black-and-white printing and about 20 seconds for monochrome.
As you’d expect, it’s slower when printing photos, with a 5×7 print on photo paper taking about two and a half minutes. At 5×7 inches, it prints completely borderless. If you are happy with a border, it will be 14 × 8.5 inches.
The Tango X claims it can scan and print, but that’s just using your iPhone’s camera to photograph documents from the HP Smart app. However, it does auto-crop when taking photos of documents, and I’ve found it to work well.
Like everyone these days, HP is trying to make subscription purchases from time to time; in this case, monthly subscriptions for ink cartridges through a program called Instant Ink.

The contract is to pay a monthly fee, guaranteeing a certain number of prints per month. The printer automatically detects when ink is low and reorders for you. Paid plans range from $2.99 per month for 50 pages to $9.99 for 300 pages.
But you will notice that there is also a free tier! This only gets you 15 pages a month, but for someone like me, that’s a lot.
You have to buy a new printer to qualify, and you can sign up for the free tier if you’ve never had a paid one, but if you’re in the same situation as me, the combo is no problem. Automatic re-ordering and completely free ink supply is definitely attractive. Even if I were to go ahead, at $1 for every 10 additional pages, I’d have to print 46 pages in a month before it costs as much as the cheapest paid tier, which is never going to happen.
The HP Tango X costs $199. You can get it cheaper without a cover, but then you lose much of the reason for buying it in the first place, that you can have a printer when you’re not using it without having to look at it. .

There are many cheaper inkjet printers available, starting at less than $50. Whether or not this is worth it depends on how much you hate the sight of white (or black) plastic boxes in your home. I’d say it’s a luxury item because you pay a significant premium for the compact size and fit, but on the other hand, it’s not a huge amount. Whether it’s worth it or not will be a very personal decision.
But for me, I think it’s a good option, and the free ink level can help justify the price.
