Canon’s Pixma TS6420 isn’t feature-rich, but it prints well, especially for the price, and connects to a variety of devices, making it a capable low-volume photo printer for families.

Canon’s Pixma TS6420 ($99.99), an entry-level consumer-grade all-in-one (print, copy, scan) photo printer designed for home use, replaces the Pixma TS6320 reviewed here at January 2020. Normally, a replacement like this would be an improvement over its predecessor, but the TS6420 was disappointed by a poor imaging engine and other downgrades. However, the budget-conscious will note that it uses fewer ink cartridges than the TS6320 and has a lower purchase price. The TS6420 can provide a family or small office with up to 100 excellent photos per month.
Most of the TS6420’s downgrades are minor – a bit slow, and the TS6320 only has two chassis color options, black and white, except for the blue option, but the reduction in ink colors and ink cartridges makes a noticeable difference in its output. Both printers have four standard process colors, cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK), but the TS6320 has black ink for blacks and the TS6420 doesn’t.

Canon Pixma Mg7560 All In One Cloud Printer Review: An Internet Connected Printer With Photo Print Quality To Die For, But It Might Require Tinkering To Set Up And Use
Also, instead of a separate cartridge for each ink, you only get two tanks, one filled with black ink and the other with three colors. The tanks hold less ink than the cartridges, and if one of the three color tanks is emptied before the other two, the remaining ink is wasted and the entire CMY tank must be replaced. Many printers do not use this configuration, but it can still be found in some other inexpensive models, such as HP’s ENVY Photo 7855.
Tanks save a bit of space, so the TS6420 measures 5.9 by 15.9 by 12.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 13.8 pounds. It’s a few inches smaller and lighter than the TS6320 and ENVY Photo 7855. Bigger and weighing about a pound is Epson’s Five-Ink Expression Premium XP-6100, and it’s bigger and heavier. than all machines is Brother’s MFC-J995DW. INKvestment Tank AIO.

The Pixma TS series is Canon’s photo-optimized line. Although the TS6420 includes a scanner, it is not intended for heavy use, so there is no automatic document feeder (ADF); lift the cover and place the original directly on the scanning bed. Of the machines mentioned above, only the Brother and HP models have an ADF installed.
Most of Canon’s high-end Pixmas come with multi-color LCD control panels, but the TS6420 only gets a 1.44-inch OLED screen and a few buttons on the right side of the printer’s faceplate. The LED status bar helps you print and view the printer’s status.

If you’re a smartphone fan, you don’t need that screen. Like many new consumer-grade printers, the TS6420 supports voice activation at home via Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant.
Paper handling consists of two 100-page paper sources: the front drawer and the rear lift-off tray. The rear tray can hold 20 sheets of premium photo paper or #10 envelopes, and the printer automatically detects the media type and source as needed. TS6320 power parameters are the same. The same printers always have less. The Epson XP-6100 holds up to 100 legal-size pages and 20 photo-size premium photo pages, the Brother MFC-J995DW holds 101 letter-size pages, and the HP ENVY Photo 7855 holds up to 100 letter-size pages, up. to 40. premium photo paper sheets, or 10 #10 envelopes.
Paper input capacity consists of two 100-sheet trays, a front drawer and a rear pull-out tray.
Canon no longer publishes service cycles and recommended monthly volumes for consumer-class printers. Most of the machines mentioned here are relatively low volume, but no more than 1,000 pages per month or more than 300.

The Pixmas TS series has one or two connection types for each computer device, including Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. You can connect the TS6420 to a computer via USB, wireless network or mobile device with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, or Canon cameras and other PictBridge devices with PictBridge Wireless. A nice feature is Bluetooth 4.0 LE (Low Energy), a peer-to-peer network protocol that allows simultaneous printing from several mobile devices.
Other mobile protocols include Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Mopria, as well as some Canon mobile services such as Pixma Cloud Print and the Canon Print App. Canon’s Message in Print feature embeds messages and links into printed images that friends and family can open by scanning the images with their smartphone or tablet camera. You can download Easy-PhotoPrint Editor to your phone, tablet or computer. Canon has also thrown in Scan Utility (Windows and Mac) and Scan Utility Lite (Mac).
Canon rates this Pixma at 13 monochrome pages per minute (ppm) and 7.8 ppm for color pages. Six seconds per page (or less than 10 seconds for color printing) might not be slow, but trust me, when you’re waiting for a ten-page print job to finish, it feels like forever.
I tested the TS6420 via USB from our standard Intel Core i5 benchmark running Windows 10 Pro. It printed our 12-page Microsoft Word text document at an average speed of 13.2 ppm, a hair faster than its rating. Among the other AIOs discussed here, this score is average.

I then create many full-color Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint business documents that include charts, graphs, and other business graphics and embedded images. Then, I combined these results with the results of printing a 12-page Word document to calculate a comprehensive score for printing a full set of documents in attempt. Here, the TS6420 manages 4.5 ppm, but this is typical of other entry-level AIOs.
The TS6420 printed our colorful and highly detailed 4-by-6-inch photos in an average of 39 seconds. That’s almost twice as slow as the TS6320, which takes 20 seconds per image.
Like every Pixma I’ve tested over the past few years, the Pixma TS6420 prints well. The output is worth the wait. Text comes out crisp and well-formed, with most point sizes up to about 8 points. This AIO text output should be acceptable for most types of business, home, and student production.
Excel charts and graphs, PowerPoint presentations, and Acrobat documents also look great. The flaws I noticed – some light banding and almost invisible lines – were only visible after I looked for them carefully, which is something viewers of your documents can’t do.

In terms of photo printing, this Pixma, like most others, prints unlimited photos up to letter size or 8.5×11 inches. It gives photos and documents a professionally finished look.
Canon certainly knows how to take pictures, but a four-ink system just can’t stand up to a full-color system. Some photo-optimized printers, such as Epson’s XP-6100 and Canon’s TS6320, use five (about six) inks. These complementary colors provide a wider color gamut and more detail, creating bright and accurate color images.
Don’t get me wrong—the Pixma TS6420’s photos are great. But they’re not the best of the photo-oriented Pixma or other similarly priced photo printers.
At 6 cents for monochrome pages and 15.8 cents for color prints, the TS6420 is very expensive to use. I recommend choosing this unless you print more than a few hundred pages per month, especially if you want to print in color. It has a slightly lower cost than the TS6320 due to the slightly smaller ink color – one of the few improvements over the previous model – but it outperforms many ink models.
