A multifunction printer may have an automatic document scanner (ADF) or a flatbed scanner or both.
How To Scan In Canon Printer
To scan a document on a flatbed scanner, place the document face down on the scanner glass and place the scanned document as shown in the video at the alignment angle.

Be sure to keep the scanner glass clean to get the best scanner possible. Smudges on the scanner glass will make areas of the travel document appear unclear or blurry.
In the ADF scanner, you insert the document to be scanned face up or according to the instructions of your printer.
An ADF scanner printer can scan multiple pages without having to change pages. The scanner takes one page when scanning and then takes the next page for the scanner.
It is important to keep the ADF scanner glass clean and make sure that there are no paper jams, staples, or other foreign objects. Only clean sheets of paper should enter the ADF scanner or the paper will jam in the scanner roller.

In scanner applications, in all software versions or printer models, you usually set the scan resolution to 200 dpi as a good compromise between file size and quality, 300 dpi is good quality, and 150 dpi is useful for sending small file sizes.
When scanning images, you should use the maximum dpi that is not too slow for you. 600 dpi can scan slowly, and 1200 dpi is really slow, but the quality is still greatly increased.
Specify the output file type, PDF document for documents and multi-page scans and Jpeg for images and articles or magazines with images.

As HotHardware reports (opens in new window), David Leacraft is suing Canon USA in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Leacraft has filed a class-action lawsuit (opens in new window) alleging Canon advertises its multifunction printer as an all-in-one device that can print, copy, scan and fax. The problem is that if they run out of ink, Canon disables the scan and fax functions.
In the past, when a user raised this issue on Canon’s support forum, the company responded by explaining that the feature was disabled to protect the printer. In a forum (opens in new window) posted in 2016, Canon responded to a customer who asked why he couldn’t scan without ink on his MG 5420 by saying:
“If you get an “Ink Out” error, you will not be able to use the machine until the ink is replaced. These precautions are in place to prevent damage to the printer if you try to print with an ink that fails. Use the ink to cool the print head during printing. Without ink, the print head may be damaged or the unit may need service.”
Scanning does not require any printing, so this answer does not explain why the feature is disabled. Leacraft claims in his complaint that what Canon is doing is a “design problem.” The complaint continued:
Home & Small Office Printers
“Canon does not represent or warn consumers that ink is a necessary component for scanning or faxing documents. Therefore, consumers are forced to incur unexpected and unnecessary burdens and costs in the form of purchasing ink or options that are not possible. Scanning or faxing documents using so-called all-in-ones devices.”
Leacraft is demanding a jury trial and seeking monetary damages, injunctive relief and for Canon to “immediately cease the deceptive advertising and marketing campaigns and engage in a remedial process to notify consumers of the use of the misleading advertisements.”
The question this lawsuit asks, and hopefully the jury, is who would buy a multifunction printer if they knew in advance that they would need a regular supply of ink to scan or fax documents? I suspect many consumers will not.

To scan a document using a Canon printer, first connect the USB cable that came with the printer to the printer and a USB port on your computer. Then turn on the printer if it has a dedicated power button. Next, open the scanner lid to access the glass platen where you will place your documents. Lay the paper down and align the edge of the paper with the hash marks along the edge of the glass plate. Close the scanner lid. If your printer and computer are configured correctly, you can click the “Scan” button on your printer to automatically upload the scanned image. Otherwise, if you have Windows, type “Windows Fax and Scan” in the start menu and click on the application. This will open the Fax and Scan tool. Click the “New Scan” button and wait for your document to appear. On a Mac, click Apple in the upper-left corner of the screen to open the drop-down menu. Select “System Preferences” and click “Printers and Scanners”. Then click on the name of your printer in the available devices menu. Select “Open Scanner”, select your preferred settings
