Back by popular demand! Abyssinian Oil is a natural seed oil with an extremely light, non-greasy skin and refers to the “extra” advertised in our product… Last Week’s Oil Preparation In this blog post we learned how to infuse botanicals into oils for a variety of purposes. But you may not always want an oil as the base of a botanical extract; sometimes an aqueous base is preferred. So let’s learn all about water-based botanical extracts.

Top 9 Botanical Extract Companies

A water-based botanical extract is the same as an aqueous botanical infusion, only stored for a longer shelf life. Water-based extracts are great because they are so easy to use in many projects. You can easily replace some or all of the water content in the formula with a water-based extract!

Like macerating oils, making water-based botanical infusions is simple, and the possibilities are almost endless. However, they are not as strong as other types of extraction because water is a relatively weak solvent. But this makes them suitable for all skin types because they are very soft.

My favorite way to use water based botanical extracts is in my shampoo (recipes here:  DIY Shampoo Recipes). This way I can get all the amazing benefits of plants into my hair. In addition, it fully adapts the shampoo to the specific needs of the hair.

Hydrosols, although they use a water base, are not the same as botanical infusions. Hydrosols are a by-product of the essential oil production process. They are usually limited (the essential oil manufacturer decides which ones to make) and you can only buy rose water, geranium, tea tree, orange and a few others.

Water-based botanical extracts are basically glorified teacups. The most important thing when making them is to store them properly or they can introduce bacteria into your formulas. Make sure you use the correct amount of preservative and that it is fully incorporated.

As with oil maceration, I recommend using only dried herbs to make water-based extracts. Fresh plants and fruits introduce too many microbial species into the water at will and make proper storage difficult. If you do not use them within 2-3 days, it may spoil your product.

When preparing an infusion based on herbal water, pay attention to the ratio of herbal to water 1:5. Choose one or more combinations of herbs, then mix equal parts of each in a sterilized glass. Pour over freshly boiled, slightly cooled water. The filtered water should be boiled, but not boiled, as this can “cook” the delicate herbs, so let it cool a little for 3-5 minutes after boiling. Use only filtered or distilled water as tap water is full of bacteria. To make a strong infusion, steep the herbs in water for at least 30 minutes or even overnight, then strain and make sure all the herbal matter is filtered out. It is mixed with 1-2% preservatives to extend the life of the infusion and vial. Store in a cool place away from light and direct sunlight.

I wonder what the shelf life of most water based botanical infusions is? You won’t know for sure unless your infusion is lab tested to standards. Shelf life depends on many factors, including the sterility of your instruments, storage conditions, etc. But personally, I’ve never had a problem with my botanical extracts going bad. I added them to my skin care products, shampoos, toners and other products and they all lasted months before I used the product. As long as you use the right amount of preservatives, your extracts should be fine.

Natural Botanical Extracts Range

When it comes to making botanical extracts, your options are almost endless! You can also make blends to really enhance your formulas. Here are some ideas:

For use in shampoos: aloe vera, sorrel, marshmallow, rosemary, fenugreek, pepper. You can read more about special botanical hair infusions here:  DIY herbal wash

To use Terinara: preparation of flower extracts such as rose, aloe vera and green tea, such as jasmine or lavender.

Sterilize all containers, then add petals and flower petals to the glass. Mix them, mix well and cover with water. Let it stand for at least an hour, and it can be longer with occasional stirring. When you are satisfied with the strength of your infusion, strain well and mix in the preservative. Bottle and apply directly to the skin in skin care products or even as a toner.
