Did you know that you can use the Epson EcoTank printer for sublimation? Converting the inkjet printer to a dye sublimation printer is actually quite easy. And the best part is that it’s an affordable way to get started with sublimation printing at home. So if you’ve ever thought about adding sublimation to your craft space, this post is definitely for you!
Epson Ecotank For Sublimation Printing
First, let’s talk about the supplies you need and what you shouldn’t buy to do this printer conversion.
Choosing The Best Sublimation Printer In 2022!
I did a lot of research and I can really recommend the Epson EcoTank series for conversion. There are ways to convert their other printers, but they are much more complicated and expensive. I use the Epson Eco-Tank ET-4700 and you can get it here on Amazon or I ended up buying it here from Target. I decided on this particular EcoTank model because it was in stock. You can shop for other models, just make sure they say EcoTank!
I recommend buying a new printer for this process. There are online tutorials on how to rid a used printer of old ink and then add sublimation ink. Apparently it works most of the time, but has a fairly high failure rate. If you come across an EcoTank deal, give it a try, but keep in mind that it may or may not work.
You will also need sublimation ink for the conversion. I used Hiipoo sublimation ink and everything you need is included in the kit including syringes and gloves. I will say that switching ink brands is complicated, so I would pick a brand and stick with it if you can.
Now that you have the supplies, it’s time to do the conversion on the printer itself. You can see my YouTube video below on how to change a printer.

After removing the printer from the box, you can throw away or donate the ink that came with the printer. Instead, you will fill the EcoTank printer cartridges with sublimation ink. The printer has ink tanks on the side.
Just flip the top and you can see each of the tanks. Individual colors are marked with black, yellow, magenta and cyan.
Each tank has a lid that just flips open to reveal an opening, and that’s what we’ll use to fill each one.
Open the Hiipoo Sublimation Ink and you’ll find syringes and gloves. I recommend wearing gloves when working with this ink.

Just add the syringe to the vial and tilt it when you pull the plunger. Once you have the ink inside, insert the syringe into the filling hole and slowly push it into the ink tanks. Just slide it gently as the ink will flow in.
Watch the windows on the front as they will show you how much ink you have added. You don’t want the ink to go over the top line.
Once you have one color done, repeat the same process with all the other colors. Use a new spray for each color. One thing to note is that it only takes about 1/2 bottle to fill the ink tanks, so you have plenty of ink in the set to start.
Once all your ink tanks are full, you can move on to printer setup. Note: Do not plug in the printer until the ink tanks are full!
Are Epson Ecotank Printers For Sublimation Printing Worth It
Once you have finished filling the tanks, blow air through the syringes to get all the ink. I like to make it in a disposable cup. Store ink in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Now that there is ink in the printer, we can start the setup. Here’s a quick rundown of the steps, but there’s a tab in the printer with the details for you. Note: This only needs to be done at first power-up. You won’t need to do these steps every time you print.
