So which one is better for a beginner photographer? We think the Nikon D3500 is a better choice for most people. Sony A1 Vs Nikon Z9 Vs Canon R3: Which Flagship Camera Should You Buy? (2022)

In this technical blog, I present my tests of the two leading candidates for the best DSLR camera for nightscape and astrophotography: Canon 6D
To answer that, I ran a series of outdoor tests using exposures you’d actually use in the field for typical nightscapes and deep-sky images.
Nikon Z9 Vs Canon Eos R3
Both cameras are stock, off-the-shelf models. They don’t have custom astronomical filters. Both are 20- to 24-megapixel full-frame cameras that are roughly competitive ($1,900 to $2,300).
For the images taken through the lenses, I used the Canon L-Series 24 mm on the Canon 6D and the Sigma 24 mm Art lens on the Nikon D750.
Conclusion: Both are great cameras, the Nikon D750 excels in nightscapes and the Canon 6D deep in the sky.

Why Canon And Nikon Photographers Switch To Fuji
The 24.3-megapixel Nikon D750 has 5.9-micron pixels, while the 20.2-megapixel Canon 6D has slightly larger 6.5-micron pixels, which should theoretically reduce noise on the Canon. How do they compare in practice?
The scene was used in a noise test (here with Nikon images) showing the development settings used in both the Nikon and Canon series. NO noise (color or brightness) reduction was applied to the images, but exposure, shadows, contrast and clarity were increased and highlights were reduced.
I shot the moonlit night scene (above) at five ISO settings, 800-12800, with increasingly shorter exposures to get identical lights. I processed each frame as shown in the image above, improving the shadows, clarity and contrast typical of nightscapes. However, I did not use noise (or brightness or color) reduction during processing. I also did not take and use dark frames.
Highlights of a small portion of the frame (listed in the box at the top right of the Photoshop screen) show very similar luminance noise levels. The Canon shows a bit more color noise, especially more magenta pixels in the shadows at high ISOs. Its larger pixels did not provide the expected noise benefit.
Canon Vs. Nikon
I took the images below of the Andromeda Galaxy that same evening through a 92mm aperture reflector. Processing has been applied as little as possible, but at the same level. At this level of inspection, the cameras look similar.
For many years, Nikon DSLRs had a reputation for not being suitable for shooting stars, as the built-in noise reduction affected even Raw files, eliminating small stars along with the noise. Raw files were not raw files. The owners solved this by enabling long exposure noise reduction, and when LENR started after exposure, they manually turned off the camera.
This so-called “Mode 3” function produced a raw frame without noise reduction. Apparently, this clumsy solution made it impossible to automate the acquisition of raw image sequences with Nikon.
Are Nikons still disabled? Looking at deep-sky images at the pixel-by-pixel level (below), I saw no difference in resolution or ability to capture small and faint stars. With its 4MP advantage, the Nikon should resolve finer details and smaller stars, but in practice I couldn’t see much of a difference.
Canon Vs. Nikon: What Brand Has The Better Camera?
On the other hand, I saw no evidence of Nikon’s “star eater” reputation. I think it’s time to put this Nikon bear to rest. The Nikon D750 proved to be just as sharp as the Canon 6D.
Note that in the close-ups above, the red area indicates the highlight (the galactic nucleus) which is overexposed and cropped. Nikon’s DSLRs also have a reputation for sensors that have a greater dynamic range than Canon’s, allowing for better capture of highlights before the clip is set.
However, in practice I noticed very little difference between the two cameras. Both cut at the same points and to the same extent.
A problem that is little known outside of astrophotography is that a deeply embedded DSLR sensor can cast shadows on the raised mirror and the sides of the mirror box. Less light hits the edges of the sensor.
The Demise Of Nikon And Canon Dslrs Is A Good Thing
The vignetting effect is only noticeable when we increase the contrast to the high level required for deep sky images and when shooting through fast telescope systems.
