If you’ve been waiting to preview and print from your iPad or iPhone to your Epson printer with the right color profile for your media, the wait is over. Epson is rolling out a version of print layout software for mobile devices that adds color management printing for all Epson profile media. The problem is that, for technical reasons, it only works with two professional wide-format desktop photo printers that the company just announced: the 13×19 SureColor P700 and the 17×22 P900.
Epson’s New Ecotank Printers
The app will first be released for iPad in May, followed by an iOS version in July. The $799 P700 (roughly £645 or AU$1,270) will also ship in early May, while the $1,295 P900 will be available a month later. Epson has no plans to continue selling its predecessors, the P600 and P800, at lower prices.
There is no system-wide color management in iOS or iPad OS. Apple can make all screens as consistent as possible and map mobile operating systems to sRGB, but the rest is left up to individual app developers to work out. So you get a neutral color matching app like X-Rite’s ColorTrue.
This is acceptable for most display-based workflows, but not for printers. A printer can have multiple profiles, each for different paper, and cannot assume the color gamut that it can in the lowest common denominator sRGB gamut. This can be particularly annoying, as Adobe RGB, the standard color space used for editing for print, doesn’t fully overlap with Apple’s beloved color space, P3. The printer area is nowhere to be found. They are also reflective and not emissive like displays, so they are very dependent on the color of the light.
Unfortunately, this still means you can’t edit exact print colors within the various apps. It can’t “see” the printer’s profile to correctly map colors to the screen, and iOS doesn’t act as an intermediary. So Epson’s solution is a layout app that lets you make advanced global adjustments with a preview that’s as accurate as possible right before printing (including advanced black-and-white support). It can also visually match paper color for unsupported papers.
Epson Announces Long Awaited Refresh To Surecolor Printer Line
Epson is releasing it for iOS, at least because it means the closed ecosystem can adopt a default display profile. Android, by comparison, is anarchy.
But printers are definitely welcome. It feels like forever since Epson last updated its SureColor P600 and P800 wide-format desktop photo printers. Two years ago I put off buying a P600 because I thought my 4 year old printer would soon be replaced. No.
Now six years on, Epson has finally refreshed its 13×19 and 17×22 printers, releasing many of the new technologies and features that debuted in October 2019 with the floor-standing SureColor P7570 and P9570, and making some long-overdue changes. New P700 and P900:
Epson has also reduced the amount of ink cartridges for the P900. Smaller cartridges save cost per milliliter, but reduce stickers and are cheaper to accommodate most people who don’t need larger capacities.
